New Zealand: A Land of Magic and Serenity

This time round our small travel group embarked on a New Zealand (NZ) road trip comprised of three couples, ourselves, one other from the US, and one from the UK. Two of the couples were making pit stops along the way before arriving in Auckland.

Our tour of New Zealand and Australia was a curated private/bespoke 28 day itinerary, with 17 days in NZ, followed by 11 days in Australia. It was our longest time away from home — yikes!

Flight to Land of Magic

For our maiden trip to one of the most isolated countries, we opted for a non-stop flight to Auckland on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, departing from JFK. This would be the longest non-stop flight for us, approximately 18 hours.

On boarding the plane we were greeted by the flight crew outfitted in black jackets and purple tailored dresses and suits adorned with traditional Maori koru patterns. These intricate designs added an authentic touch to their uniforms, reflecting the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The business class seats were exceptionally comfortable, complete with a plump pillow, blanket, and a rolled mattress cradled next to the side of my headrest. Ah, yes, the Dopp kit also in black and purple, complemented the overall theme.

A large screen displayed an image of a waterfall in a rainforest, accompanied by the words “Kia Ora.” This traditional Maori greeting is more than just a hello; it is a heartfelt wish for good health, happiness, and vitality. The indigenous people of New Zealand are called Maori, and their language is Te Reo Maori

Kia Ora to All!

The service on board was excellent, and the meals were delightful, although next time, I will ensure not to order the Asian Vegetarian option.

Pre-flight and On-board rituals

When we mentioned to friends that we were booked on a non-stop 18-hour flight, their reactions were of sheer astonishment. For such lengthy journeys, I come well-prepared with my iPad loaded with shows and movies. I get cozy in my pajamas, watch some entertainment, sleep, and watch more – all while guzzling water and taking periodic walks.

Reflecting on the long-haul flight, having just returned home on United’s flight from Sydney back to Newark, via LAX, where the first leg was approximately 13 hours with a layover of about 2.5 hours, and the last leg of approximately 5 hours, I firmly believe that the longer outbound flight on Air New Zealand was more comfortable and relaxing.

A noteworthy tip for these late-night long-haul flights: I eat a light snack and skip the main meal served for dinner. This practice helps me arrive with minimal jet lag, feeling refreshed and ready to embark on our adventure.

In the Land of Magic

Upon arriving in New Zealand, we were immediately struck by the laid-back atmosphere. This view was further strengthened over the course of our stay in the country. The people here exude a relaxed demeanor, and life moves at a leisurely pace. It’s a place where time truly waits for you, allowing you to savor each moment.

A journey through Middle-earth

New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes have become inseparable from the mythic world of Middle-earth. Sir Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works-The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies-were filmed entirely across both the North and South Islands, transforming the country into a living storybook. From the lush, rolling hills of Matamata, where Hobbiton nestles among sheep pastures, to the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps and the tranquil beauty of its beaches, New Zealand’s diverse topography brings Tolkien’s vision to life. Each region offers its own otherworldly charm, inviting travelers and dreamers alike to step into scenes that feel both cinematic and timeless.

The Majesty of the Mountains

The Southern Alps stretch like a silver backbone across New Zealand’s South Island, their peaks forever crowned with snow and ice. Here, Aoraki/Mount Cook rises above them all, touching the sky at 3,724 meters. Standing beneath its gaze, you feel both small and spellbound. These mountains offer a dreamlike stage for climbers and wanderers, their presence both timeless and awe-inspiring.

Braided Rivers and Their Mystical Flow

Braided rivers wind through New Zealand’s valleys and plains, weaving silver threads across wide beds of gravel and stone. Their channels split and rejoin, forming ever-changing patterns that seem painted by nature’s own hand. Glacial melt feeds these rivers, making the water clear and cold, mirroring mountains and sky in shimmering reflections. Standing on their banks, you feel the quiet artistry of time and water, shaping the land in a dance both ancient and ongoing.

This has to be where the Almighty does his/her daily pranayama!!!

Primeval Forests

Stepping into New Zealand’s ancient forests feels like wandering through a living time capsule. Towering kauri trees, some over two thousand years old, rise quietly from the shaded earth. Moss and ferns drape their massive branches, softening the light and deepening the hush. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and green leaves. Only the distant calls of native birds break the silence. In places like Waipoua Forest, where Tāne Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere stand as silent giants, a sense of wonder lingers in the cool, timeless air

Emerald Hills and Pastoral Vistas

The rolling hills of New Zealand, soft and green, feel like a dream. Sheep graze quietly, like whispers on the emerald slopes. This peaceful scene is a timeless symbol of Kiwi life and beauty.

A Touch of Fantasy

For lovers of fantasy, New Zealand stirs memories of Middle-earth. The land itself feels touched by magic. Rolling green hills in Matamata become the Shire, where Hobbiton nestles quietly among sheep pastures. Farther south, Fiordland’s misty peaks and deep forests echo the wild beauty of the Misty Mountains and Fangorn. Each corner of the country whispers of epic journeys and ancient tales. Here, the spirit of Tolkien’s world lingers, inviting dreamers to wander and believe.

Quirks and Tips

  • Toilets in New Zealand seem to flush longer, way longer than elsewhere.
  • Hotels, restaurants, and bars often employ young people from all over the world for summer temp jobs. However, be prepared for early closures, even on weekends.
  • Shops also tend to close early, so it’s best to plan your shopping trips accordingly.
  • Restaurants offer plenty of options for vegetarians across NZ’s small towns and cities, ensuring a delightful culinary experience.
  • Domestic flights are remarkably hassle-free, with no security checks or frisking at the airport, making travel within the country smooth and efficient.
  • The North Island, while less populated with sheep, boasts vibrant cities and cultural richness.
  • The South Island, renowned for its majestic landscapes, is home to more sheep and offers breathtaking scenery. Contrary to popular belief, traveling across the South Island does not engulf you in the smell of sheep poop.

When to Visit

As summer fades into autumn down under, February through May offers gentle, cool days. The ocean still holds a comforting warmth, inviting swimmers and adventurers alike.

We visited New Zealand in early February 2025, when summer’s warmth still lingered. The North Island wrapped us in gentle 70s-degree breezes. Meanwhile, the South Island whispered cooler tales, blending 60s and 70s with quiet grace. That time of year felt just right-perfect for adventures and soaking in the country’s timeless beauty.

Our Itinerary

Personal quirks

Having shared insights about what we found in NZ, it would be only fair to share some of mine:

  • Shoes get packed in a separate suitcase, not with my clean clothes, even when I use a shoe bag.
  • Laundry gets packed separate from my clean clothes. I usually pack my laundry and shoes together in the same suitcase.
  • Rather not carry soiled clothes with me if I can avoid it.
  • Even though I carry enough clothes for a trip, I much prefer to do laundry along the way.
  • If you want to know about laundromats around the world then ping me for a low-down.

Yes, I know(!), my quirks speak volumes! 🫢😢🙃

In Summary

Our journey to New Zealand was an experience of a lifetime, even though it came with some trepidation about baggage weight restrictions on domestic flights. From the comfort of our non-stop flight on Air New Zealand to the enchanting landscapes and the warm, laid-back people, every moment was magical. Whether you are a fan of breathtaking scenery, cultural heritage, or cinematic history, New Zealand promises an unforgettable journey through its awe-inspiring terrain. So, keep an eye out for Hobbits, and let the land of the long white cloud cast its spell on you.

We left with a heartfelt desire to return to this land of magic and serenity.
