Day 4 – New Year’s Day – Special Ops Boat (SOB) cruise
It was charted by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903–05, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, and named by him for Vice Admiral Ernest Fournier of the French Navy. The bay itself is on the north coast of Anvers island.
It turned out to be a beautfiul winter’s day, little windy, but nice and cool.
For our first excursion the bed was laid out with our thermal top and bottom, thick socks, woolly hat, parka, liner, jogging pants, waterproof pants, along with snow goggles and the life jacket. In total had three layers for the top half and two for the bottom. The life jacket was heavy – it was not your regular run-of-the-mill version.
Cruising in the SOB, with the wind in your face, the views of the picturesque landscapes with ragged edges and undulating lines looked peaceful but mighty.
We were fortunate enough to see a few humpback whales, approximately 100 feet away. They were in a playful mood – behaving like we cannot be bothered to put on a show for these noisy humans in their growling boat.
